Series of Savings: Ways to save more on coffee K-Cups, Pods, and other stuff   (Installment 1 of 3)

Posted by Andrea on 05/15/12 at 11:00 AM

If you’re like most of us out there, you like to get a good deal.  Whether it be for a house, a car, dinner, or maybe the most important…. coffee!  We can’t help much with the big-ticket items, but we certainly know a few tricks to save you big bucks on what we know best: coffee. (Coffee K-Cups, Coffee Pods, and Flavia packs included.)

Our first tip in this series of savings:

Don’t invest before you test!  There’s nothing worse than buying an entire box of one flavor K-Cup and finding out that you don’t like it.  That’s why at Coffee King we offer K-Cup 6-Packs.  For only $5.25 (sometimes lower when they’re on sale) you can purchase a sampler pack without the risk of filling your carousel with a blend that won’t make your morning brighter.

Here are a few suggestions that are worthy of testing:
Mahogany K-Cups by Caribou Coffee
A satisfied customer recently wrote: “This blend is absolutely the best coffee available if you like full flavor but no bitterness. After trying many other k-cup flavors and manufacturers, this rose to the top immediately.”

Does all this yummy flavor in my K-Cup mean more calories?

Posted by Andrea on 04/24/12 at 10:52 AM

Coffee beans on their own contain next to zero calories.  Each cup of coffee brewed by the typical K-Cup may result in two or three calories as a result of traces of bean oil, but these calories are negligible. But what happens to that calorie count when you brew your favorite flavored K-Cups like Hazelnut, French Vanilla, and Southern Pecan?

Not much, is the answer.  Because of the way the flavors are extracted from the original source, and then added to the coffee beans (after roasting) the flavors add virtually no calories to your favorite K-Cup brew.  How’s that for permission to indulge?!  The Coffee King team gives you permission to go for it!  But wait…

Why does flavored coffee sometimes SMELL so aromatic but then taste much milder?

Posted by Andrea on 04/17/12 at 11:20 AM

We’re putting great K-Cup flavors like these under a microscope this week:

Gloria Jean’s Butter Toffee K-Cups
Green Mountain Chocolate Glazed Donut K-Cups
Green Mountain Island Coconut K-Cups (Limited Edition - shop soon!)

Many coffees are flavored by extracting the flavor or aromatic component from its natural source (cinnamon from a cinnamon plant, hazelnut from the hazelnut plant). The manufacturers then use a spectograph to identify the precise molecular structures that comprise the flavor.  Many times the molecular structures are then duplicated scientifically…. Hence the phrase “Natural and Artificial.”

Caffeine study relieves nursing moms of one worry

Posted by Andrea on 04/03/12 at 09:47 AM

A new study out of Brazil concludes that “caffeine consumption during pregnancy and by nursing mothers seems not to have consequences on sleep of infants at the age of 3 months.” In other words, moms who need help staying awake can feel free to sip their favorite espresso without worrying that it will also keep their nursing babies awake.

Given the recent relaxation on pregnancy and caffeine, this news doesn’t seem quite as shocking as it would have 3 years ago.  The thought is that infants may not be able to metabolize caffeine like older children and adults do.  So coffee lovers who are also new moms may not have to add caffeine-withdrawal to their list of ailments during these demanding times, which many many folks are sure to cheer about.

What the study doesn’t touch on is when children do start to metabolize caffeine, and could all of the recent findings…

A recent book release Heart 411 - The Only Guide to Heart Health You’ll Ever Need (Three Rivers Press) by Marc Gillinov M.D. and Steven Nissen M.D. brings coffee to the forefront of health news once again.  And oh yeah, it’s good news.

The authors report that coffee does not cause high blood pressure and poses no risk to people who have high blood pressure.  Coffee is also NOT linked to an increase risk of coronary heard disease.  So once again we say to you, drink up!

Coffee Lesson - What does “Fair Trade Certified” mean?

Posted by Andrea on 01/17/12 at 01:19 PM

Many of the coffees you’ll find on our site say “Free Trade Certified” on the label, and we advertise them as such.  But what does it mean?  Something about trading freely, of course.  But here is a more official definition: Fair Trade is a movement aimed at helping small farmers around the world by setting minimum product pricing on goods.  This promotes healthier trading environments in developing countries and improves sustainability. (All good things!)

In regards to coffee, this is what the Fair Trade USA Organization says…

One of our Twitter followers - @maderradio - asked what a Keurig brewer sounds like in operation. To answer his question, I recorded the sounds a Keurig B155 Platinum Home Brewer makes while it is starting up and while it is brewing a K-Cup - Tully’s French Roast, if you were wondering.

Green Mountain, having acquired the majority of K-Cup roasters, is beginning to evaluate the product lines of each brand and eliminating some duplication. They are even trimming their own line back. See the attached list of K-Cup carried by CoffeeKing.com which have been ear-marked by Green Mountain for elimination.
